To capture beautiful, natural images, it's important to have fun

Choose the right Location: Select a spot that resonates with your family, the right setting can spark joy and create a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Dress Comfortably: Encourage everyone to wear outfits they feel good in. Comfort translates to confidence, which equals more natural expressions in photos. Aim for coordinated colors or patterns that complement each other without being overly match.

  • Plan for Play: Incorporate activities or games during the session. Having fun while I capture candid moments will result in genuine smiles and interactions, rather than stiff poses.

  • Be Flexible: Kids can be unpredictable, so it’s essential to go with the flow. Allow for breaks and let them explore. A relaxed atmosphere will lead to authentic moments.

  • Snacks and Rewards: Bring along some snacks or set a little reward for after the session! This will help keep spirits high and can serve as a sweet incentive for the kids.

  • Emphasis Connection: Instead of posing stiffly, focus on interactions—holding hands, cuddling, or sharing a laugh. Genuine connections will sparkle in your photos.

  • Trust the Process: Remember that I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Trust the process and enjoy the time spent together. Your joy will shine through in the images!

Following these tips will help to create a fun, relaxed environment where beautiful, natural photos can flourish. Can’t wait to capture these precious moments with you!r everyone! Here are my top tips to get your crew excited and ready for a stress-free session:

Newborn Photography with Props

Ultimately, the goal of newborn photography in props is to create timeless keepsakes that families will cherish for years to come. The right combination of props and settings can beautifully encapsulate the joy and wonder that a new baby brings into the world.

Newborn photography in props is an art that adds a unique dimension to capturing those fleeting moments of your baby’s early life. Using carefully selected props, Emma Pender Photography can create enchanting scenes that highlight the beauty and innocence of newborns. These props can range from soft blankets and delicate outfits to rustic baskets, and handmade headbands.

When selecting props for newborn photography, it’s essential to choose items that are not only visually appealing but also safe and comfortable for your baby. Natural textures and soft colors often work best, as they complement the newborn’s delicate features without distracting from them. Consider earthy tones and pastels, which provide a timeless backdrop, enhancing the overall warmth of the images.

Pose variation is another critical aspect of incorporating props. From snuggly positions in a soft basket to relaxing on a fluffy rug, each setup allows for creativity and showcases the unique personality of the baby.

Incorporating family elements, such as heirloom blankets or items that hold sentimental value, can infuse your newborn photography with personal storytelling. These thoughtful touches not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide a lasting connection to the images.

Top Melbourne Newborn Photographer | Emma Pender Photography
Melbourne Newborn Photographer | Emma Pender Photography

When is the best time to do my newborn session?

After nearly 8 years photographing the most adorable babies in Melbourne, we’ve found that the best age to do a newborn session is 7-10 days old. At this stage, babies are still very sleepy during the day (maybe not so much at night!) and very supple which is essential for newborn photos with props.

What if I don’t know when exactly my baby will arrive?

We only take a certain amount of bookings per month so that we can be flexible with babies arriving before and after their due date. We just ask that you let us know within a day or two of baby’s arrival and we’ll arrange the session date from there. If you haven’t made a booking and you’ve had a baby, still feel free to contact me and we’ll do our best to fit you in.

Where will the newborn session be held?
The session will take place at our cozy Sunbury studio, where we have all our dresses for mum, over 300 knitted bonnets, headbands, blankets, props etc

What type of newborn sessions do you offer? Posed newborns or lifestyle shots or both?
We photograph both posed and lifestyle newborn sessions and have packages to suit both styles of photography.

Can I incorporate sibling and family photos with my baby?
Yes, definitely! We offer two packages that includes immediate family. The gold package is really focused on the family and is more of a lifestyle session. The platinum package (our most popular package) has baby posed in newborn props and also photos of the family in our lifestyle setting.

What happens if my baby needs feeding during the photoshoot?
If baby needs a feed, you are more than welcome to do so in our studio. We encourage you to take your time feeding and we do not rush this process. For your privacy, we leave the studio while you are feeding. For the session to be successful, it is essential that baby is content. You may be concerned about how baby will cooperate at the session, but we have a lot of experience dealing with newborns and only 2 in 700 babies have needed to return to the studio another day for a second attempt.

What happens if I miss the newborn stage?
I highly recommend contacting me as soon as you decide to have a photography session. Every age is beautiful to capture and there are always options for a session.

One of the most asked questions that I receive is ‘Can my partner be in the photos?’ and the answer is ‘OF COURSE’! They are hugely encouraged to come along to the maternity session as some of the most gorgeous photos are of the little interactions between the couple. Whether it’s your first, second or third pregnancy, being present in the photos is a special way of capturing the change in your relationship and the anticipation of parenthood.
